  • End of the 2017-18 School Season

    Our last day of English classes is Wednesday, May 9th. On that day, we will have a potluck party. Please bring food from your country to share so we can all learn about different kinds of food. The party will start at 10:00AM.

    We will not have summer classes, but you can come to our conversation group on Friday mornings, 10:00-noon at Lucky’s Market, in the Community Room, behind the wine section. Lucky’s Market is across from Kirkwood Community College on Lower Muscatine Rd.

    Fall registration for English classes will be on Wednesday, September 5th at 9:45 AM at the Good News Bible Church, 845 Pepperwood Lane. The first day of class will be Monday, September 10th at 9:45 AM.

    We have had a fun year, serving about 146 students in our daytime program and 37 in our evening class (in partnership with ICCSD and NCJC) at the Broadway Neighborhood Center. Our students this year come from 36 countries and speak at least 24 different languages.

    Special thanks to the University of Iowa Conversation Center and MERGE for partnering with us to create Community Conversation. Other projects have included Friendship Pals, matching students with community members for conversation and friendship, and our advanced English book club.

    Friendship Community Project thanks all our volunteer teachers, teaching assistants, registrar, director and other volunteers, our donors ( including Hills Bank, University of Iowa Community Credit Union, and the Community Foundation of Johnson County) and the Good News Bible Church for providing us with classroom space. We couldn’t do this without all of you!

  • Spring Semester English Classes Begin Monday, January 29th

    English classes are beginning again this Monday, January 29th at 9:30AM. in the basement of the Good News Bible Church, 845 Pepperwood Lane, next to the Iowa City Post Office.

    Returning students will go right to class.  New students will register and take a very small placement test before joining a class.

    If the weather is bad and the Iowa City schools cancel or delay classes, we will cancel classes, too.  If we cancel, it will be posted here, on our Facebook page, and on KCRG’s weather cancellations list.  We will also send the information out to returning students on our email list.

    To keep us all safe this flu season, please do not come to class if you are sick.  Thank you!

  • No English Class Nov. 22nd.

    No English classes tomorrow, Wednesday, November 22nd, because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

    Thai Flavors in Iowa City hosted  a recent Friendship Community Project fundraiser night, donating part of the evening’s proceeds to our English classes.  Thank you, Thai Flavors!

  • More Community Conversation!

    English language learners–  Come to this week’s Community Conversation, friendly, relaxed 1 on 1 conversation with students trained in conversation in the University of Iowa Conversation Center.  Beginner through advanced English learners are welcome!

    This week’s event will be on Tuesday, November 14th, 11AM, at the MERGE building, behind the Iowa City Public Library Come practice your English for an hour or so and have some fun!

  • 2nd Community Conversation, Oct 31st!

    We’re doing it again! Free, drop-in English conversation for people who are learning English–1 on 1 or in small groups with volunteers from the University of Iowa Conversation Center. Please note the different location and the extra half hour this week: Tuesday, October 31 at 11 AM – 12:30 PM Meeting Room D, Iowa City Public Library, 123 S Linn St. Iowa City

    If you missed registration for English classes, no worries! Come to 845 Pepperwood Ln in Iowa City (Good News Bible Church) at 9:30 AM on Monday or Wednesday morning and sign up before class. Newcomers are always welcome!
